Certificate in University Teaching for Habilitation Students of the FAU Medical Faculty

Guidelines of the Faculty of Medicine on the Habilitation Procedure

Persons who open the habilitation procedure at the Faculty of Medicine of FAU after January 1, 2016 or submit their habilitation thesis after January 1, 2019 must provide evidence of attendance of continuing education courses in higher education in the amount of 60 study units (AE) in the form of the Certificate in Medical Education Bavaria.

Who needs which certificate?

Depending on whether you habilitate as a practicing medical doctor or as a rer.nat., different regulations apply under the new regulations:

Practicing Medical Doctor

The Certificate in Medical Education Bavaria is obligatory for practicing medical doctors. Of the 60 prescribed study units (AE), at least 30 must deal with educational topics specific to medicine. The remaining units can be acquired in the area of general higher education teaching:

More detailed information on the contents and structure of the certificate can be found in the agreement of the Competence Network Medical Didactics Bavaria (p. 8). The FBZHL offers once a semester the course Educational Qualification “Certificate Medical Education Bavaria of Basic Level”.

Non-practicing Medical Doctors (e.g., rer.nat.)

Habilitation students who are not practicing medical doctors (e.g., rer.nat.) may earn the Basic Level Certificate in University Teaching with 60 study units (AE) in general university didactics:

Please note that a double certification (i.e., applying for the Certificate in University Teaching and applying for the Certificate of Medical Education) is not permitted.
