Certificate for Teaching in Higher Education of the Bavarian Universities

Teachers at FAU can obtain the Certificate for Teaching in Higher Education of the Bavarian Universities after participating in FBZHL seminars. Through the Bavarian-wide standardized certification and the orientation towards the standards of the German Society for Higher Education Teaching (“Deutsche Gesellschaft für Hochschulschuldidaktik”, dghd), you will receive a certificate of your pedagogical-educational qualifications.

We recognize all seminars of the Bavaria-wide association ProfiLehrePlus for the certificate. Training courses from other institutions can be credited after being reviewed. Please find out which credits you need to obtain for which certificate and how to request the recognition.

Certificates

The Certificate for Teaching in Higher Education of the Bavarian Universities has a modular structure and can be acquired as a certificate of the basic level, advanced level, and specialization level over 60, 120 and 200 study units (“Arbeitseinheiten”, AE). The FBZHL also allows student tutors to obtain certification for their training in higher education teaching. The following credit must be earned for the respective certificate.

Certificate for Teaching in Higher Education of the Bavarian Universities - Basic Level (60 AE)

To obtain the “Certificate for Teaching in Higher Education at Bavarian Universities – Basic Level”, please provide evidence of at least 60 AE from the following areas:

Certificate for Teaching in Higher Education of the Bavarian Universities - Advanced Level (120 AE)

As of April 1, 2022, the Higher Education Teaching Association of Bavarian Universities has changed the requirements for the advanced level (at least 120 AE) in the areas A-E. The compulsory credits in area D have been increased from 10 to 25 AE. As a conclusion of the advanced level, the seminar “Der Blick auf die eigene Lehre – Abschlussveranstaltung zur Aufbaustufe” is obligatory, in which the acquired knowledge and competences are reflected upon again together and applied to one’s own teaching.

For the acquisition of the “Certificate for Teaching in Higher Education of the Bavarian Universities – Advanced Level” please prove at least 120 AE from the following areas (starting 01.04.2022):

The “Certificate for Teaching in Higher Education of the Bavarian Universities – Specialization Level” will be issued as soon as you have obtained the Certificate for Teaching in Higher Education of Bavaria (120 AE) and have successfully completed the program of the specialization level:

Topic-specific Certificate DIGITAL TEACHING (DiL) (80 AE)

The [DiL] Topic Certificate DIGITAL TEACHING was designed by the Institute for Learning Innovation (ILI) in cooperation with the FBZHL. It is targeted at FAU instructors who wish to develop and enhance competencies for the conception and implementation of digital university teaching.
Within this framework, we offer seminars focused on the meaningful use of digital media in teaching. As a result, you will acquire relevant university, examination, and media pedagogical competencies.

Study units that you earn in [DiL] courses can be credited toward the Certificate for Teaching in Higher Education of the Bavarian Universities.
We do not recognize study units awarded as part of designing a digital teaching-learning unit for the Certificate for Teaching in Higher Education of the Bavarian Universities.

Topic Certificate Inclusive Higher Education Teaching (40 AE)

The topic certificate “Inclusive Higher Education Teaching” is intended to make teachers at universities more aware of the topic “Studying with Impairments” and to give them more confidence in dealing with impaired students in everyday teaching. Within the framework of the seminars, various measures are developed to enable all persons to study and participate in university life. The certificate is offered by the University of Augsburg in cooperation with the DiZ – Center for University Teaching in Ingolstadt and is open to all teachers at Bavarian universities.

The certificate comprises 40 study units, which can be acquired by attending the topic-specific courses. Whether or not a seminar can be credited towards the certificate is noted in the seminar description on ProfiLehrePlus.

At FAU, the following seminars are offered in cooperation with the Office for Gender and Diversity, for example:

  • Psychische Auffälligkeiten bei Studierenden

FAU Certificate for Tutors (30 AE)

Tutors have the opportunity to acquire a Certificate in Higher Education Teaching from FAU, which documents attended FBZHL seminars for tutors. For the certificate, at least 30 AE must be acquired. They are composed as follows:

We follow the nationwide standards for qualification and higher education teaching certification of the Netzwerk Tutorienarbeit.

The FAU Certificate for Tutors is also recognized for the Certificate for Teaching in Higher Education of the Bavarian Universities – provided that participants also teach at FAU after their studies.

Certificate of Medical Education

Anyone starting their habilitation at the FAU Faculty of Medicine after January 1, 2016, or submitting their habilitation thesis after January 1, 2019, must provide evidence of having attended 60 study units (AE) of training within the Certificate of Medical Education in Bavaria.

The Certificate for Medical Education is obligatory for practicing medical doctors. Of the 60 AE required, at least 30 must deal with educational topics specific to the field of medicine. The remaining units can be acquired in the area of general higher education teaching:

You can find more information about the contents and the structure of the certificate on the website of the Kompetenznetz Medizinlehre. The FBZHL regularly offers the course for Didaktische Qualifikation “Zertifikat Medizindidaktik Bayern der Grundstufe”.

Habilitation students who are not practicing physicians (e.g. rer.nat.) only need proof of the Certificate for Teaching in Higher Education of the Bavarian Universities of the Basic Level of 60 AE in the field of general higher education teaching.

Certificate Application

Basic and Advanced Level

On the ProfiLehrePlus homepage you will get an overview of your already acquired study units (AE). Click on the button “Apply for certificate now”. We will then review your request and contact you personally. Unless you inform us otherwise, we will send the certificate to the address provided on www.profilehreplus.de/en.

The Certificate for Teaching in Higher Education of the Bavarian Universities is based on the Quality Standards for the Accreditation of Achievements in Higher Education Teaching Training of the German Association for Higher Education Teaching (dghd).

Please check whether you meet the requirements for applying for the certificate. This includes:

  • The training courses in higher education teaching must have been attended less than six years ago.
  • No more than half of the AE for the certificate may be earned from outside services.
  • Evidence of participation in at least one of the following seminars or courses:

The Certificate in Higher Education Teaching is signed by the President of FAU, Prof. Dr. Joachim Hornegger, and the Vice President for Education, Prof. Dr. Bärbel Kopp, which is why it usually takes about four weeks before we can send you the certificate.

Specialization Level

The certificate of the specialization level is automatically awarded after successfully completing the specialization level. A separate application is not required.

Topic Certificate DIGITAL TEACHING (DiL)

To apply for the topic certificate, please use this online form. To do so, log in with your access (not the IdM ID!). There you can find a list of all attended courses and upload the corresponding certificates of the seminars under “Submissions”.
The certificate will be sent to the postal address provided after successful verification. The certificate is sent on a quarterly basis.

Topic Certificate Inclusive Higher Education Teaching

To apply for the topic certificate, please send your certificates of participation to profilehre@qa.uni-augsburg.de.

The certificates are issued every six months and signed by the Minister of State for Science and Art Bernd Sibler.

FAU-Certificate for Tutors

To apply for the certificate for tutors, please send the following documents via mail to fbzhl-tutoren@fau.de:

  1. Scans of the attendance certificates
  2. Submission of your reflection report
  3. Your details and the FBZHL training courses you have attended entered in the following online form.

The FAU certificate for tutors is signed by the FAU President, Prof. Dr. Joachim Hornegger, and the Vice President for Education, Prof. Dr. Bärbel Kopp, which is why it usually takes about four weeks until we can send you the certificate.

Certificate of Medical Education

To apply for the certificate, please contact Dr. Anita Schmidt at the Faculty of Medicine directly. The FBZHL is not authorized to issue the Certificate of Medical Education.

Please note that a double certification (i.e., applying for the Certificate in University Teaching and applying for the Certificate of Medical Education) is not permitted.

Accreditation of External Courses and Manual Entry of Seminars on profilehreplus.de

If you have booked training courses in higher education teaching via the FBZHL website before October 2016, external courses, or seminars of other institutions in higher education teaching, please enter them manually in our course management system if you want them to be credited for your certificate.

  • If you have not already done so, please create a user account at www.profilehreplus.de/en.
  • Click on “My ProfiLehrePlus” in the right-hand menu and then on “Closed seminar bookings”.
  • Click on “Create seminar manually”. A window will open. Please enter the seminar details. Select FBZHL of FAU as the responsible coordinator. Close the window.
  • Then upload the scan of the certificate of attendance and click on the button “Request confirmation”.

Criteria for the Accreditation of External Achievements

After consultation, external activities from other institutions can be considered for the certificate in higher education teaching at the basic or advanced level, if the following criteria are met:

  • The relevance of the course to higher education teaching must be clearly evident.
  • The event must be assignable to one of our content areas.
  • The duration, the institution, and the trainer of the event must be documented by a certificate of attendance.
  • We only recognize continuing education courses that were attended less than 6 years ago.
  • Only professional training courses can be recognized, no study achievements or self-conducted events.

Please note that a maximum of 10% of the study units for the certificate may be acquired from external services.

The accreditation is based on the quality standards for the accreditation of achievements in higher education teaching of the German Society for Higher Education Teaching (dghd). Further information and explanations on the quality standards can be found here.

Submit External Achievements for Review

  • If you have not already done so, please create a user account on www.profilehreplus.de/en.
  • Click on “My ProfiLehrePlus” in the right-hand menu and then on “Closed seminar bookings”.
  • Click on “Create seminar manually”. A window will open. Please enter the seminar details. You can leave the study units blank or make a suggestion. Select the FBZHL of FAU as the responsible coordinator. Close the window.
  • Then upload the scan of the certificate of attendance and click on the button “Request Confirmation”.
